In addition to the direct use of logs, wood is processed into board square timber or other products for use. In order to reduce the deformation and cracking of wood in use, the square timber usually has to be dried naturally or artificially. Natural drying is the air drying of stacks of wood. Artificial drying mainly uses the drying kiln method, and simple baking and baking methods can also be used. A drying kiln is a drying chamber equipped with circulating air equipment to regulate and control the temperature and humidity of the air. The wood dried by the drying kiln is of good quality, and the moisture content can reach less than 10%. Wood that is prone to decay in use should be preservatively treated in advance. The method of gluing can glue the board into a large component, which is used for timber structures, wooden piles, etc. Wood can also be processed into plywood, chipwood, fiberboard, etc.
In ancient buildings, wood was widely used in temples, palaces, temple towers and private houses. Among the existing ancient buildings in China, the most famous are the East Hall of Foguang Temple on Wutai Mountain in Shanxi Province, built in 857 A.D., and the Wooden Pagoda in Yingxian County, Shanxi Province, built in 1056 A.D., with a height of 67.31 meters. In modern civil engineering, wood is mainly used in building wooden structures, wooden bridges, formwork, electric poles, sleepers, doors and windows, furniture, building decoration, etc.
